Tallahassee, Florida

Tallahassee (pronounced [ˡtæləˌhæsiː]) is the capital of the State of Florida and the county seat of Leon County. As of 2008, the population recorded by the U.S. Census Bureau is 172,574, while the Tallahassee metropolitan area is estimated at 360,013.

The name is taken from a Muskogean Native American word meaning "old fields," probably named by Creek Indians who traveled here after being displaced by American settlers, and found the area of what is now the city to have been cleared by earlier native settlers. The first European exploration of this area was Hernando de Soto's 1538-39 expedition which came through what is now the city. It was established as the territorial capital of Florida in 1821, and became state capital in 1845 upon Florida's admission to the Union. During the Civil War, Tallahassee was the only Confederate state capital east of the Mississippi not to be captured by the Union. The city remained small until the Florida population boom in the mid 20th century.

Tallahassee is the home of Florida State University, Florida A & M University, and Tallahassee Community College and Pat Thomas Law Enforcement Academy; Barry University, Embry Riddle and Flagler also have branches in Tallahassee. It is also a regional center for trade and agriculture and is served by Tallahassee Regional Airport.
